How to get books: Hold, Borrow, Request

Hope International University is a member of a network of California academic libraries called Camino. Camino libraries integrate their catalogs through WorldCat Local so our patrons can search them all at once. When our patrons find a book that the HIU library doesn't have, they can still get it in a hurry if it is available from one of the Camino member libraries. And if that doesn't work, there is still another option.

Be sure to set up My Library Account to be an HIU Darling Library Patron.

Then here's how to get books:

1. Before going to the library, search the library's catalog online. 
2. Be sure you are logged in to My Library Account (or Patron Account Login.)
3. Find a book you want to borrow. 

Best Case Scenario: The book is owned by Hope International University...

1. Click on the Place Hold button. You should see a notification that your Hold request is successful.
2. If it is not checked out (or when it is returned), the library staff will put it on the Hold shelf for you behind the Circulation Desk and you will receive an email letting you know when it is available for you to pick up. You may also sign in to My Library Account to see if the book is on the Hold shelf for you.
3. Go to the library's Circulation Desk and check it out with your HIU ID card.

NOTE: Holds will be returned to the stacks if they are not picked up after seven days on the Hold shelf .

Second best: Can you wait two days? If it is not owned by HIU but is held by another Camino library...

1. Check Availability. 
2. If it is available, click on Borrow on Camino button. (Did you remember to sign in to My Library Account?) You should see a notification that your request was successful.
3. If a Camino library honors your request it should be at the HIU Library within two days. You will receive an email letting you know when it is available for you to pick up. You may also sign in to My Library Account to see if the book is on the Hold shelf for you.
4. Go to the library's Circulation Desk and check it out with your HIU ID card.

NOTE: Books will be returned to the Camino lending library if they are not picked up after seven days on the Hold shelf .

If it is not owned by either HIU or Camino, but another WorldCat Library... can you wait two weeks?

1. Click on Request item through Interlibrary Loan button. You should see a notification that your request was successful.
2. Wait for email notification on whether the request is being filled.
3. If it is, it should be at the HIU Library within two weeks. You will receive an email letting you know when it is available for you to pick up. You may also sign in to My Library Account to see if the book is on the Hold shelf for you.
4. Go to the library's Circulation Desk and check it out with your HIU ID card.

NOTE: Books will be returned to the lending library if they are not picked up after seven days on the Hold shelf .

You will receive a courtesy email reminding you when the book is due then overdue notices if you do not return it to the HIU Darling Library on time. You may be able to renew it by signing in to My Library Account (depending on the lending library's policies.)
