New Book Highlight: IVP Bible Dictionary Series

This month’s highlight is special in that we are going to take a look at two new books and the series they are a part of! The two books that just arrived are the Dictionary of the Old Testament: Historical Books and the Dictionary of the Old Testament: Wisdom, Poetry & Writings. These two books are actually a part of a larger set of books in the IVP Bible Dictionary Series. With the addition of the new books, we now have the complete set which includes the following additional titles:

  • Dictionary of Jesus and the Gospels
  • Dictionary of the Old Testament: Pentateuch
  • Dictionary of Paul and His Letters
  • Dictionary of the Later New Testament & Its Developments
  • Dictionary of New Testament Background

All of the books in this series are reference books that would be wonderful resources for anyone writing a paper for a biblical studies class. The books are split up into articles/entries on a particular topic; for example, if you were to look up the entry for “David” in the Historical Books volume, you will find over eight pages of material addressing topics like the historical/cultural background on David, the events going on in the world during the time sources mentioning him were written (including extrabiblical sources!), and what scholars have to say about the authority of those different sources. This background gives further commentary on how David is portrayed in each of these cases and the controversies surrounding him.

Each section concludes with a bibliography that could help direct you to further relevant sources, as well as other related articles in the dictionary itself. In the case of our “David” example, related articles would be: Davidic Covenant, David’s Family, or History of Israel 3: United Monarchy… As you can see, these books are full of valuable information that you can make use of!

Unique among reference books on the Bible, the volumes of the IVP Bible Dictionary Series bridge the gap between scholars and those pastors, teachers, students and lay people desiring in-depth treatment of select topics in an accessible and summary format.
Articles cover traditional and contemporary topics, including cross-sectional themes, methods of interpretation, significant historical or cultural background, and each Old and New Testament book as a whole.

In part and in whole, the IVP Bible Dictionary Series presents the fruit of evangelical biblical scholarship at the intersection of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries--committed to the authority of Scripture, utilizing the best of critical methods, and maintaining dialog with contemporary research and challenges facing the church. – IVP
