How to Find Bible Commentaries in the Darling Library

Bible commentaries are a heavily used resource in the Darling Library. Students sometimes have a difficult time finding them, but once they understand how commentaries are organized on our shelves this task becomes much easier.

The first thing to know about Bible commentaries is that the Library provides access by both commentary sets and by individual books of the Bible.

Commentary sets are found in both the REFERENCE collection on the 2nd floor and in the MAIN collection on the 1st floor. Here is how sets are arranged by call number:
  • Sets - All books of the Bible are found by the call number 220.7
  • Sets - Old Testament books only are found by the call number 221.7
  • Sets - New Testament books only are found by the call number 225.7
Certain sections of the MAIN collection in the Library are dedicated to commentaries on individual books of the Bible. This makes it easy to find all the commentaries on one book of the Bible in one place. For instance, if you want to find all of the commentaries on Matthew in one location you would go to the "Matthew" section (call number 226.2). The list of call numbers for individual books of the Bible is quite extensive and is included on the graphic below. Click the graphic in order to open it; you can then enlarge it by clicking it a second time.

This graphic is available as a handout on the 2nd floor of the Library. Please stop by the Research Guide stand and pick one up!
