NetLibrary's February eBook of the Month
The NetLibrary electronic book (eBook) service we subscribe to makes a specific title available each month to all subscribers. So even though we may not have purchased that title, it will be freely available for the month in which it is the "book of the month." The February eBook is A Companion to African-American Studies edited by Lewis R. Gordon (Temple University) and Jane Anna Gordon (Temple University). The book is published by Blackwell Publishing and dated 2006.* The NetLibrary advertisement describes the book as follows:In celebration of African-American History Month, NetLibrary has partnered with Blackwell Publishing to offer A Companion to African-American Studies as the February eBook of the Month. A groundbreaking re-appraisal of the history and future of African-American studies, the Companion includes original essays by expert scholars in the field and covers each topic with authority and clarity.
Edited by Lewis R. Gordon and Jane Anna Gordon, A Companion to African-American Studies is a definitive intervention at a critical time in the history of race relations and in the academic field of race and ethnic studies. Bringing together a dazzling array of established and emergent voices, the Companion opens with a series of reflections from those who waged pitched battles to establish African-American Studies as a bona fide academic discipline and captures the dynamic interaction of African-American Studies with other fields of inquiry.

New Display for our Pulitzer Prize Library Collection
Did you know that the Library holds a special collection of Pulitzer Prize winning novels from 1918 through 1973? Most people don't. This Pulitzer Prize Library Collection was donated in 1979 by Carl A. Bimson in honor of Dr. William Boice. Dr. Boice was the senior pastor at First Christian Church in Phoenix, Arizona for many years.
Unfortunately, when the library rennovated back in 1998-2000, the display cabinets that had housed this collection for twenty years were lost. Since then, they have been displaced until recently when we put them in this lovely cabinet. The problem was that the doors were solid so we could not see the beautiful books. So, we called Roy Krieger, husband of PCC faculty secretary, Laura Krieger. He replaced part of the wood with glass and installed locks on the doors. (Plug: Roy's Custom Cabinets of Fullerton, California.)
Next time you're in the Library, stop by the display cabinets behind the Information Commons Staff Desk on the 2nd floor and take a look through the glass at this beautiful leather-bound, gilt edged collection of 48 titles.Pictured: Student Library Assistant, Holly Colson.
What's New with the Library Staff?
Sarah Kimakwa, Acquisitions and Technical Services Manager, has just started attending Library School through San Jose State University's School of Library and Information Science which operates a hub on California State University, Fullerton's campus. She should be our next professional librarian by the end of 2008!
Bethany Dye, Support Services Manager, has taken an ESL Teaching position in the Institute for International Studies requiring her to reduce her library load to about 3/4 time. She continues to provide administrative support for the library and instructional support for the Nutwood campus. (By the way, she has also just become engaged to be married in June!)
Joe Watson has just traded Audiovisual responsibilities for his new role as Voyager System Administrator. This means a great deal of computer learning on the job is in store for Joe, but this is nothing new for him! He continues to provide copy cataloging and back up for our new AV Assistant.
Krystal Harris has moved from being one of our strongest Student Library Assistants in Public Services to a larger, but less public role as Serials Assistant. And Chris Caudillo has joined the staff to alleviate the Audiovisual load from Joe, allowing him to take on systems responsibilities.
Continuing as Public Services Manager, Nicole McDermott also coordinates Interlibrary Loans. And Terri Bogan continues as our Reference and Instruction Librarian, also providing leadership in the area of Electronic Resources.
While the Technical Services staff are taking on greater responsibilities to help alleviate some of the load, Robin Hartman continues to function in a dual role as Director of Library Services and Systems and Technical Services Librarian.
