New ID System for HIU

The library houses and administers the University ID system. This week the first of a two-part upgrade was implemented. A new PVC printer now prints and encodes cards in less than 45 seconds - that's compared to the 10 minutes per card using the old system! This will make a significant difference during high peak times such as New Student Orientation when the processing of ID cards traditionally causes a bottleneck.

Part two of the long-overdue upgrade will come with the software update which will allow more efficient integration between the ID system and the campus information managment system. The look of the ID cards may change as well.

Welcome to our new AV Assistant

We are pleased to announce the addition of a new Audiovisual Assistant, Chris Caudillo. Chris is a sophomore Intercultural Studies major at PCC with excellent AV experience and knowledge.

We have had other student AV Assistants in the past but with the infusion of "smart" classrooms last year, the amount of AV assistance the library provided was significantly reduced so that Joe Watson was able to keep up with the needs on campus on his own.

Now the library staff is being restructured. In order for Joe to have time to take on new Voyager System Administration duties, he will need to pass AV responsibilities on to Chris. He begins today working 20 hours a week.

Welcome Chris!

Our 100,000th Record

Almost eight years ago the Darling Library "went live" with our first automated system (Voyager). In preparation for that day in July 1999, we had all of our card catalog records converted to digital format and had barcode labels made for all the books. At that time, we loaded 46,732 bibliographic records (representing separate distinct titles) and about 56,798 item records (the number of actual volumes on the shelves).

Today we celebrate a milestone with our 100,000th bibliographic record! This represents years of careful work to put the library's books, videos, periodicals, ebooks (and more) accurately into the system -- and we're proud of these efforts! In anticipation of this event, we've selected a special book for the honor.

Join us in the celebration by checking out our 100,000th title:

Rabe, Alan, Editor. Hope for the Future: Contemporary Values of the Restoration Movement. Fullerton, CA: Hope International University Press, 2006.

It is a discussion guide written by our Hope faculty on how the enduring values of the Restoration Movement (upon which our institution was founded) apply today. Since the first of the University's core values claims our adherence to these RM values, the question on the mind of many was, What are the values of the Restoration Movement and do they have relevance today? So, the faculty, headed by Dr. Alan Rabe, Dean of the School of Graduate Studies, set about the task of answering that question in the form of a publication to help others who might also have the same question.

One copy will be put in the Archives with other faculty publications, other copies will be available for check out.

To order a personal copy of this book, contact the HIU Bookstore at (714) 992-5911 or go to HIU Faculty Publications web page.

Merriam-Webster Word of the Year

Every year Merriam-Webster takes nominations for word of the year. They compile a list of the top ten from these submissions. This year the number one word is truthiness. It is an interesting new word recently coined to refer to "truth that comes from the gut, not books", or "the quality of preferring concepts or facts one wishes to be true, rather than concepts or facts known to be true". For a full list of the top 10 words for 2006 and past years, go to Merriam-Webster online: http://www.m-w.com/info/06words.htm

NetLibrary's January eBook of the Month

The NetLibrary electronic book (eBook) service we subscribe to makes a specific title available each month to all subscribers. So even though we may not have purchased that title, it will be freely available for the month in which it is the "book of the month." The January eBook is Lower Taxes in 7 Easy Steps by Attorney Stephen Fishman and published by Nolo in 2006.* The NetLibrary advertisement describes the book as follows:

Many personal finance books are full of hype, promising a radical reduction in taxes (or no taxes at all). Unfortunately, they often tout obscure tax strategies that apply to only a handful of people -- or doubtful schemes that could bring on the IRS.

Lower Taxes in 7 Easy Steps is a different kind of book, providing insights and tactics that can reduce taxes. Clearly and concisely, it explains the seven most valuable rules of tax planning:
  1. Boost tax-free income
  2. Get a lower tax rate
  3. Defer paying taxes
  4. Make the most of deductions
  5. Take advantage of exemptions
  6. Identify and use tax credits
  7. Shift income to other taxpayers

Each rule is fleshed out with plenty of ideas, strategies and real-life examples that can help minimize the pain of April 15.

Periodicals in a Bind

The Darling Library has begun binding periodicals for the first time this year. Periodicals are expensive. Not only must we pay annual subscription fees (that tend to cost more for libraries and increase each year), but periodicals must also be stored and should be bound. Of course, binding can also be expensive, but it allows for easier handling and storage. They are easier to keep track of than loose issues and replacing missing issues can be costly. This fall, we started binding those titles we have determined to "keep all". Next year we plan to bind back issues of titles we keep for twenty years.

Issues that are bound together, stay together!
